Surf Toss™ Games

Two is cool, One’s just as fun!

While the initial intent of creating Surf Toss™ was to find an alternative to the large clunky plywood boards used in Cornhole, time has shown that there are many alternative games that can be played using these.

It’s understood that the cost associated with the production of a surfboard out weigh some of the other options available. With that we encourage you to try one out.

Below we lay out the “traditional” guidelines for Cornhole as well as some options for the whole family and those that aren’t Cornhole aficionados.

We encourage you to even come up with some of your own ideas and share them with us! Get your creative juices flowing!

One Board, No Problem!

S-U-R-F

The game of HORSE or PIG played on land or in the water. A fun game for 2 or more.

  1. Grab one board place it anywhere. Grab one bag per player.

  2. Decide who throws first. Coin flip or Rock, Paper, Scissors.

  3. Start by letting the first player throwing in the hole.

    • They can add extra rules for the throw (ex. eyes closed, over my head)

    • If they succeed in making the throw the next player must copy that throw.

  4. Next player must recreate the same throw, or create their own.

    • If the previous player MADE their throw, this player must recreate the same throw.

    • If the previous player MISSED their throw, this player can create their own throw.

  5. Keep playing in rotation by attempting the previous shot or creating new ones.

    • The order works in rotation until it returns to the player that made the original shot.

  6. A player receives a letter when they fail a challenged throw.

    • If a player does not make the previous throw they get a letter. (starting with “S”)

    • Once a player accumulates S-U-R-F they are out.

  7. Play until there is one player left. That player is the winner.

Cornhole

Surf Toss was inspired by the game of Cornhole. However the size and shape of the boards adds to the challenge of the game. We recommend setting the distance of the players to the boards closer (8 paces or 20 feet - nose to nose) to help accommodate the skill level of the players. If it’s still too difficult shorten it up.

The rules outlined below are from the official rules of the American Cornhole Association.

Play of the Game

Every match is broken down into innings of play. During an inning of play, each player must pitch all four of his/her bags. An inning is never completed until all players pitch all four of his/her bags.

Singles Cornhole Matches

Two single players compete against one another until a single winner is determined.

  • Both players stay in their designated lane for the whole game.

  • Players start the game at the headboard and will alternate pitching bags until each player has pitched all four of his/her bags.

  • Players then walk to the end of their lane to the other court, take score, and resume pitching back to the other board.

  • The top of an inning is completed when the first player pitches all four bags; the bottom of the inning is completed when the remaining player pitches all four bags.

Doubles Cornhole Matches

Two teams, consisting of two players, compete against one another until a winning team is determined.

  • Each team will stay in their designated lane for the whole game.

  • Players at the headboard will alternate pitching bags until each player has pitched all four of his/her bags.

  • Players at the footboard will take score and resume pitching back to the other board.

  • The top of an inning is completed when both players pitching from the headboard pitch all four bags; the bottom of the inning is completed when the remaining players pitching from the footboard pitch all four bags.

Scoring

The approved method of scoring for the sport of cornhole is “cancellation” scoring. In cancellation scoring, the points of one player cancel out the points of their opponent. Using this method, only one player/team can score in each inning.

  • Bag In-The-Count (Woody) : Any bag which comes to rest anywhere on top of the board. Each is worth one (1) point.

  • Bag In-The-Hole (Cornhole) : Any bag which is thrown through the hole or knocked through the hole by another bag. Each is worth three (3) points.

  • Foul Bags – Refers to any bag that has not been determined as Bag In-The-Count or Bag In-The Hole or was designated a foul bag as the result of rules violation
